Many people have requested the information on how to get the white lines into the star pattern. If you also want to know how this is done, this video is for you. You can get it from here.
You’ll go through all the steps taken to make these patterns. It starts out by showing you the folds that are used to get the right shape of the star with out ever touching the cotton.
You are guided through each of the folding steps. Then shown how to tie the cotton to create the star pattern onto a tapestry sheet. These things are hard to explain in writing, and therefore hard to find on the Internet. This DVD video on Stars clarifies many of the misconceptions and misunderstandings about the star pattern and the white lines.
“Just in case you’re wondering how to make this pattern on a shirt; I make another star pattern onto a tee shirt. I want you to learn the differences in folding the pattern on two types of cotton.
Once the cotton is folded, you will learn the secret to coloring the star pattern. These tie dye techniques make the perfect star pattern almost every time. Then I continue to color the Tie Dye in a somewhat fast forward mode. Not too fast, but fast enough to keep your attention, and to have room left for showing you how to make the star pattern on a shirt.
I color the Star using 5 colors. I make sure you know which color I’m using at all times. I explain how to color the unique folds and ties I’ve added to the cotton. You will get to see me color the entire Tie Dye tapestry.
Once the tapestry has been colored and 24 hours have gone by, you will see me open the Tie Dye. As the tapestry is opened I explain to you what you are looking at to help your understanding of the pattern.
In the second Tie Dye star pattern, I again use 5 colors to help aid in your understanding. So you get to hear me describe in different words how to make the star pattern. You will see each step I take.
Once the shirt has been colored and 24 hours have passed, you will see me open the shirt. This is always the best part of making Tie Dyes. You will see the magic of the Tie Dye unfold right in front of your eyes. You will see the shirt before and after it has been washed. This will help you understand what will happen to the colors after they have been washed out of the cotton. During the coloring portion of the star on the shirt, I again speed the video just enough to keep your attention at a peak level.” -Brad Garret (Phat Dyes) Tie Dye Crash Course – Stars

After knowing what your materials are, you have to know how to use these materials. First, take the white shirt and dip it in a bucket of half cup salt. Dip the fabric in the mixture for 7-10 minutes. Remove excess water and afterward dry the shirt. These wrinkled shirts shall be used for your patterns.
There are a lot of tie dye designs used these days. It is important to know several designs to have a wide range of patterns to choose from.
The first is the spiral dye design. Place the wrinkled shirt upside down. Next, pick a spot for your center then start twisting the material to form a roll (a fork works perfectly for this step). Next, turn the fabric to accomplish this roll. Hold the fabric between your thumb and forefinger and pull the loose ends with your other hand in the same direction of the roll. Three rubber bands shall be used to tie the roll together. Lastly, tie the rubber bands in a pinwheel like pattern. Six diagonal sections will be made and after sometime you may color each section with any color of your preference.
The second design is the Concentric Circles tie dye design. Place the crumpled shirt upside down. Before colouring, pull the shirt up from the center and tie it with rubber bands.
The third design is called Marble tie dye design. Crumple your white shirt into a bundle. Afterward, tie the rubber bands around the shirt in a pinwheel like pattern and plunge the crumpled t-shirt in your dye bath.
Now that you are aware of some of the different tie dye designs, you must know how to dye the fabrics. First is to choose the colours for your dye. To avoid messy accidents, use your plastic bags as mats. Next, wear your rubber gloves and grasp the shirt in the bucket of hot water. Put in the dye and roll the shirt over the bucket. After dyeing, leave the t-shirt in a plastic bag for four days. Afterward, clean the fabric with salt water. Remove the rubber bands from the fabric and rinse the t-shirt until you achieve clarity. Dry the t-shirt until the color fades. Follow these instructions and you’ll be successful in your project.
